5 Safety Tips For Painting The Exterior Of Your Home

by Bradley Davis

At some point, you may consider painting the outside of your home either because the old paint is pealing or becoming worn or you just want to see a change. Whatever the case, painting the outside of your home should be done with care. Here are five safety tips to follow when painting the outside of your home:

  1. Prepare: The first thing you want to do is prepare for the job before you jump into it. Walk the perimeter of your home. If there are any trees or bushes that are going to get in the way of the job, you will want to trim them. You should also look out for any power lines that are sitting close to your home and know how you are going to work around them. Be sure to check for loose dirt around the edge of your home, as well which can indicate that it will be dangerous to use a ladder in these areas. You may need pack the dirt more tightly in these areas.
  2. Use a Fiberglass Ladder: If you can, you should invest in a fiberglass ladder, which is much safer when working around power lines. The risk of electrocution is much lower when using a fiberglass ladder over a metal ladder. However, if you only have a metal ladder to work with, just be sure that you don't lean it in a way that it is going to be close to touching any power lines.
  3. Work With Someone: It is always best to work with someone else when painting the outside of your home. Having someone close by will ensure that emergency situations are handled as quickly as possible. If you fall off the ladder or the roof, you don't want to wait hours before you get the help that you need if you are seriously injured.
  4. Work in Close Toed Shoes: Close toed shoes should always be worn when taking on a project like this. Wearing sandals or other open toed shoes can lead to serious injuries, especially when working outdoors where you would need to be careful where you are stepping. Wearing sandals makes you more vulnerable to slipping and falling, as well, which is highly dangerous when working on the roof or a ladder.
  5. Hire the Professionals if You Need To: If you aren't sure that taking on the task of painting the outside of your home is for you, then hiring the professionals is always a good idea. They will be sure to get the job done quickly and safely while you can relax and not worry about chance of injury.

By following these safety tips, you can be sure that the outside paint job is done efficiently without any problems along the way.
